A transnational corporation is a huge business that operates in at least two or more countries, producing products or services outside its country of origin. One of the biggest transnational corporations is Swiss Food giant, Nestle, with 91 percent of their total assets, 98 percent of their sales, and 97 percent of their workforce being foreign-based. Transnational corporations have been around since before the 20th century, however, it wasn’t until the 1960’s that they became a game changer. In the early 1900’s, it was only European corporations that were huge transnational players, but by 1930, bigtime American transnational corps had begun to emerge. Today, there are hundreds of transnational corporations out there doing big business, providing jobs for people, and changing the way the world lives. Here is a look at some of the most popular transnational corporations.

Coca Cola

Founded in 1886, Coca Cola is one of the biggest manufacturers of nonalcoholic beverages and syrups. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, Coca Cola is a transnational manufacturer, retailer, and marketer of these beverages. The company is also the world’s largest plastic polluter, producing over 3 million tons of plastic packaging every year, and that includes 110 billion plastic bottles. The company owns its anchor bottler in North America, Coca Cola Refreshments. This transnational corp sells beverages in more than 200 countries with over 50 billion beverages of all types being consumed daily worldwide.

Starbucks, founded in Seattle, Washington, in 1971, is an American coffee company and coffeehouse chain. Starbucks first became profitable in the early 1980’s with its first location in Seattle. In 1996, Starbucks opened up its first location outside North America in Tokyo. This transnational corporation conducts business in over 30,000 locations all over the world. Starbucks has become so popular due to marketing its coffee to white-collar professionals. Starbucks’ atmosphere inside of their stores is very appealing due to its hip and contemporary design. Starbucks locations serve up hot and cold coffee drinks, teas, and juices.

Google

Founded in 1998, Google is an American transnational technology company that specializes in online products and services including online advertising, search engine, cloud computing, software, and hardware. Alongside Amazon, Apple, and Facebook, it is considered one of the Big Four technology companies. In 2015, Google decided to reorganize their various interests as a conglomerate named Alphabet. Alphabet has a chain of products, acquisitions, and partnerships including, but not limited to Gmail, Youtube, Android, Nexus, and Blogger. Google has been recognized by Fortune magazine as one of the best companies to work for. They have a very relaxed atmosphere, treating their employees more like family members.

IKEA

IKEA is a European transnational group founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, who was named the eighth richest person in the world in 2018. The company designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances, and home decor. Since 2008, IKEA has been the world’s largest furniture retailer. As of June 2019, there are 433 IKEA stores operating in over 50 countries, and there was over $38 billion worth of IKEA goods sold in 2018. If you take a look at the IKEA website, you’ll find over 12,000 products. The company is responsible for about 1 percent of the world’s commercial-product wood consumption. What makes this company so different is how their stores are operated. Every single IKEA store includes a restaurant serving traditional Swedish food including Swedish meatballs, french fries, and even hot dogs.

Formerly Federal Express, FedEx Express is a cargo airline based in Memphis, Tennessee. A subsidiary of FedEx Corporation, it delivers packages and freight to almost 400 destinations in almost every country every single day. In 2017, it was the world’s largest airline when it comes to freight tons flown. In the United States, FedEx Express has a national hub at Indianapolis International Airport, and a total of 12 air hubs in the company’s worldwide network. Federal Express’ sales exceeded $65 billion in 2018, and that year, the company ranked Number 50 on the list of the largest United States corporations by total revenue. FedEx Express was also recognized as one of the top 100 companies to work for in 2013.

Today, there are hundreds of huge corporations that are doing business in many different countries, with several of those companies being online businesses. When companies originate online, it is easy for them to conduct business on a larger level and in several countries. Some of my favorite online companies include Deezer, Pokerstars, and EMP. I know that EMP serves many different countries, however, I am not sure if the others are considered transnational yet. Even still, there are hundreds of huge companies out there that own or control production of products and services in at least two or more countries, and these would be great companies to keep an eye on.
